UWRL Building Marshals

During emergency situations, building marshals will help gather people from their area and direct them to the appropriate evacuation or direct employees to shelter in place. Please know the building marshals in your office area.

First Aid

First Aid Kits are available in the first and third floors of the building. If an emergency arises, please follow proper procedures.

Defibrillators

A defibrillator (AED) is a device that administers an electric shock to some experiencing cardiac arrest. The UWRL has three defibrillators:

  • First floor, just east of the breezeway
  • Second floor hallway, just outside of the Receptionist's Office, Room 214
  • Third floor hallway

The defibrillator (AED) is very user friendly. Instructions are mounted in the second floor hallway with the device.

Fire Exits And Evacuation Plans

The UWRL has two designated evacuation meeting points:

  • In the Northeast corner of the main parking lot (designated by a metal sign)
  • On the new bridge out the west end of the building
  • All staff should become familiar with the location of the emergency fire alarm pull station and fire extinguisher nearest their work areas.
  • All fire alarms shall be treated as if they are real.
  • All staff should be aware of the best exit route from their work area and also have a secondary exit route planned.
  • Staff should become aware of the presence of occupants in their vicinity in order to help ensure all people exit the building during the fire alarm.
  • Building occupants should leave the building and remain at a safe distance until authorized police or fire personnel have checked the cause of the alarm and determined that the building is safe to re-enter.
  • Doors should be closed when exiting to help isolate the fire or smoke and help prevent smoke or fire damage if the fire origin is in another area. MAKE CERTAIN THAT LOCKED ROOMS ARE VACANT.
  • Elevators should NOT be used for emergency exiting.
  • For personal safety, if there is heavy smoke in a corridor, occupants should get down low, crawl if necessary, to breathe the fresher air near the floor. If clothes catch on fire — stop, drop, and roll. Running will only increase the flames.

Safety Plans

There are two types of safety plans at the UWRL. These are updated annually by faculty and UWRL administration during yearly reviews. All safety plans and documentation are kept in a Box folder—please contact the UWRL receptionist for more information or to update a safety plan.

No student, faculty, or staff member is allowed to work in the EQL or particpate in field work until they have completed the coordinating safety training.

Chemical Hygiene Plan

Chemical Hygeine Plans are required for work in the EQL and must be completed before work begins. Each faculty member should have individual chemical hygeine plans for the materials their group works with. This plan will include standard operating procedures for use of hazardous chemicals, as well as all warnings about the chemical, safe handling and disposal, PPE required, and the full procedure when the chemical(s) are used. The Chemical Hygeine Plans also includes a record of the team members' (students, staff, and faculty) training on the safety procedures related to laboratory work.

Field Safety Plan

Field safety plans are required for anyone working in the field. Field safety training must be completed before checking out a UWRL vehicle. A field safety plan will include documentation of training on required field safety procedures, as well as the safety needs of field work.

Gun Policy

Utah prohibits the open carry of firearms in schools, colleges, universities, and technical institutions in the state. If someone comes to the UWRL with a visible gun and you feel uncomfortable in any way, call USU Police immediately (435-797-1939) and notify the UWRL building manager (435-797-3157) or other UWRL Administration.
