What am I asked to do?

  1. Let USU research team or contractor install a Flume, Inc. Smart Home Water Monitor device and communication bridge.
  2. Conduct a Water Check with USU Extension Staff.
  3. Allow Flume, Inc and Water Check Program to share data with USU researchers.
  4. Meet with researchers to share what happened (subsamples of participants).

Estimated time: 2-3 hours over 6 months.

How will I benefit?

  1. Free USU Extension Water Check
  2. Install Flume device and bridge at no cost ($200 value).
  3. Help your household increase the effectiveness of your irrigation system and reduce outdoor water use.
  4. Keep Flume device at study end.

Who is eligible to participate?

  • Single family households in Logan & Hyde Park.
  • Have in-ground irrigation system.
  • Use city water to irrigate.
  • Have a smart phone and WiFi.
  • Can participate in Flume install and Water Check.

What are the risks?

  • Minimal risk study. No more likely or serious than encounter in everyday activities.
  • Researchers will only share anonymous versions of data (no identifiers).
  • Researchers will store data on USU's encrypted, cloud-based Box file sharing system.

Where are the Flume device and communication bridge installed?

  • Install Flume device outside next to the water meter that services your house.
  • Install communication bridge in a garage, indoors, or other place with access to your home's WiFi.
