Celebrating 60 Years of Research at the UWRL

Utah Water Research Laboratory 2025 - 60 Year Anniversary

60 Year Anniversary

The Utah Water Research Laboratory is proud to announce the 60th anniversary of the UWRL, a milestone marking six decades of pioneering water and environmental research. Established in 1959 with funding from the Utah State Legislature, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health, the UWRL has grown to become one of the oldest and largest university-based water research facilities in the United States.

Over the years, it has been instrumental in solving water-related challenges, informing policy and management, and training the next generation of water experts.

As we celebrate this significant achievement, we reflect on the dedicated individuals and innovative ideas that have shaped the UWRL's legacy and look forward to continuing our mission to address pressing water issues locally and globally.

The Utah legislature authorized the establishment of the Laboratory in 1959. The building was completed in 1965, and from that time onward, the UWRL has been at the forefront of water and environmental research in Utah and beyond.
