2020 Data Visualization Challenge

October 13,2020 — Utah Water Research Lab Faculty Dr. Jeff Horsburgh, an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Utah State University, recently issued a challenge to USU students called the Cyberinfrastructure for Intelligent Water Supply (CIWS) Data Visualization Challenge.

What you need: Programming Knowledge (Python is encouraged) Familiarity with time-series data. Compete for Cash Prizes in 2 categories 1st $1000, 2nd $750, 3rd $500. Visualize residentail water use data. Make an impact on consumers and utilities. Develop a new skill.

Information Flyer for the 2020 Data Visualization Challenge

Dr. Horsburgh's research group is developing cyberinfrastructure to better support the collection, management, and use of smart water metering data. This challenge provides students at Utah State University with an opportunity to develop potentially novel and innovative visualizations of high-resolution residential water use data. For this year's challenge, the aim is for students to develop new approaches for providing visual feedback directly to residential water users about their own water use.

The challenge kicks off with an information meeting on October 21, 2020 at 5 PM where students will have the opportunity to meet the challenge sponsors, get ideas, and ask questions. The meeting will be held virtually, in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, and students can send an email to jeff.horsburgh@usu.edu to receive the Zoom connection information for the event.
