How to take the course for credit
If you would like university graduate credit for these courses, please indicate so on your registration form. Lael will contact you with the course number and credit cost. You will register with Continuing Education at USU and pay them directly for the credit. At the end of the course, you can access a transcript with your course credit at the USU website, or you can request an official transcript for USU records.
Prerequisite for Part II
It is possible to sign up for only Part 2 of the course. The prerequisite is Part 1 or the equivalent, and we are allowing participants to decide for themselves if they have that based on the following:
Part 1 provides our take on the general practice of restoration. We take the time to present our view of the field of fluvial geomorphology, including the use and misuse of empirical geomorphology and regional relations. We talk about how to evaluate the "brokenness" of a stream and the linkages of ecology and geomorphology. In that sense, the course might be of a similar vein to that presented in an early course of Dave Rosgen, although I am sure our slant is very different.
Part 1 is also taught at our cooperating universities. These Part 1 courses are equivalent to ours, and will be accepted as a prerequisite to our Part 2.
Part 2 is more directly focused on issues of channel design, assuming that you have already decided that reconstruction of a channel is important. If you have specific questions about either part of the course, contact Lael Gilbert at:
